How to Repair a Canon GL1 Firewire Port

    • 1). Fully charge the battery on your camera. If the camera does not have a charged battery (or connected to a wall outlet), the camera is not going to upload the data from the tape to your computer.

    • 2). Inspect the firewire cable itself. If there are any cuts in the cable you need to replace it. The cable may also be damaged if it has been bent and twisted up for a long period of time (this rips and breaks the metal connections on the interior of the cable).

    • 3). Wipe off the exterior of the firewire port with a damp cloth. You want to make sure the port is clean; if it is not clean, the video and audio from your camera will not reach the computer. A dirty connection port prevents the metal connector of the firewire cable from touching the actual connector of the firewire port, so the audio and video signal is not able to be transmitted from the camera to the cable.

    • 4). Spray a few shots of compressed air into the open firewire port. Any dirt, dust or hair that sticks inside the port prevents a smooth data transfer. The compressed air blows the dirt and other debris out of the firewire port. Let the port dry off completely before attempting to use the camera with the computer. If this port is wet and you try to send data through it the connection may shut down due to water damage.
