South Carolina Electronic Filing Rules
- You must file a South Carolina income tax return if you are filing a federal return and you earned income within the state of South Carolina. If you have had taxes withheld from wages earned in South Carolina, you may want to file a South Carolina tax return to obtain your refund. In that case, you will want to file even if you are not required to file a federal return.
- South Carolina offers more than one way to e-file. You can e-file through tax preparation software downloaded to your home computer, by using a tax preparer certified to file electronically on your behalf or by filing for an extension and making payments through the South Carolina website using Electronic Funds Withdrawal or a credit card. You still have a choice between filing a traditional paper tax return or e-filing.
- Some commercial e-filing providers offer free e-filing to qualified South Carolinians. Visit the South Carolina Department of Revenue's Free File website to determine if you can e-file your federal and South Carolina returns for free.
