Foods to Avoid With Diverticulitis
- People with diverticulitis traditionally were told to avoid any foods that are difficult to digest, such as corn, popcorn, seeds and nuts. This is being questioned by some medical practitioners, but many still advise against these foods. This includes seeds from berries.
- Chili peppers, onions and spicy food should be avoided until the inflammation heals.
- Do not eat lentils, beans and whole grains while suffering from diverticulitis, because of their high fiber content.
- Additional problem sources are fried food, fast food, and refined items such as white flour.
- Once the diverticulitis clears up, gradually switch to a high-fiber diet to keep bowels regular and reduce pressure in the colon. Include many whole-grain breads and cereals, vegetables and fruits. Additionally, drink at least 6 cups of water daily.
