Valentine's Day - Madhumita Roy

12
Valentine's Day. The name conjures visions of flowers, gifts, cakes, chocolates, candies, rings and what not? One of the topmost holidays in the United States, Valentine's Day is almost as popular as Mother's Day or Christmas. From being only a Western festival even
a few decades ago, it has now become an international occasion that witnesses exuberant celebrations across the globe.

Valentine's Day is big business today. This is evident by the number of cards, gifts, flowers and treats exchanged during the occasion. Before you  dismiss this as hogwash, take a look at these statistics that tell a different story.

Consumers reportedly spend an average of $77.43 on Valentine's Day gifts every year.

Kids aged between 6 and 10 exchange more than 650 million Valentine's cards with teachers, classmates, and family members.

Hallmark has over 1330 different cards specifically for Valentine's Day.

About 1 billion Valentine's Day cards are exchanged annually making it the largest seasonal card-sending occasion of the year, second only to Christmas.

Approximately 3% of pet owners give Valentine's Day gifts to their pets.

The popularity of Valentines Day is clearly evident and the fact that it has survived for so long itself speaks for the acceptance of the occasion. Unlike what many people think, Valentines Day is not a card holiday. It originated from the Roman festival Lupercalia and

slowly evolved with the coming of Christianity. The holiday is perhaps best known for its associations with St. Valentine, a kindly Roman priest who was executed for performing secret marriages. In the Middle Ages and even afterwards, it became a holiday that was meant for only those who were in a romantic relationship.

In modern times, Valentines Day has become an occasion for everybody. It has become a part of popular culture. It is not only a day for lovers but also an occasion to celebrate friendship and family relationships. It is as important an occassion for kids as for young adults. Little children either buy or prepare nice gifts and cards to gift to  their parents, teachers, friends, family members and loved ones. It is observed around the world with great zeal and enthusiasm. Every 14th February witnesses grand Valentines Day celebrations and the celebrants of the holiday belong to all racial, economical, social and cultural groups.
