Stages of Water Purification

• There are different stages of water purification, and all the different devices used for purification of water certainly follow the basic methods but not necessarily in the same way. The basic idea of water purification is to remove the contaminants from surface or ground water to make it safe for consumption. Although each purifying device concentrates on removing salt and lead, there are still some chemicals left behind while essential ingredients like minerals are removed from the drinking water.
  
  

Filtered Pitchers

• Although commonly used because they are less expensive, these devices do not necessarily remove all the impurities in the water. They can filter out the large sediments and particles and also reduce the chlorine content in the water by 99 percent. Many consumers have found them effective in terms of improving the color and taste of water.
  
  

Reverse Osmosis System

• This is one of the most efficient methods of water purification. The operation involves passing of water through a semi-permeable membrane to capture large particles and then through carbon to filter the contaminants. There are small pores in the membrane that allow the water molecules to pass through. The drawback to this is that it also removes some beneficial minerals like magnesium and potassium and a good portion of water is wasted in the process. This method is most beneficial for purifying sea water as it removes the salt.
  
  

Multi-Stage Filter System

• This is one of the newer devices of water purification. The multi-stage filter system consists of two or more filter levels as it breaks the whole water purification process into different stages. This is more efficient compared to other devices as the purification is efficient and less expensive and also removes all the contaminants in the water, leaving behind the minerals essential for the human body. The basic purification ingredient used is carbon and a sub-micron porous material to create a dual filtering system.
