Twitter - The Overlooked Hash Tag

22
When people begin using Twitter, they see a hash tag # in some tweets.
Many don't know what this is all for, so maybe we should explain this and the use of both @ and RT meaning retweets.
Primarily using @ is always followed by the username of the person you wish to give an answer.
You can reply by clicking the link under the tweet, but you can also address people directly by using the @-sign.
Please be mindful that to write messages that are not visible to others, you should use the function Direct Messages in the right hand side menu.
Using RT stands for re-tweets.
This is used to show appreciation for another user's tweets, and gives you a chance to repeat this user's tweet.
You can also click the Re-tweet link under the tweet.
Mainly writting the RT code is used when you want to repeat the tweet, and maybe add a personal comment.
Could be "thumbs up" or "worth thinking about" - but maybe also some extra point that comes to mind.
The question I listed in the summary are these:
  • What is the purpose for the #?
  • How should you use the #?
  • When should you use the #?
  • What can you do with the #?
Let's answer all four questions right away.
What is the purpose for the #? The hash tag # is a way of sorting tweets.
When people write about Google AdSense ads they will typically add #AdSense to their tweets.
In a similar manner the Hundred Articles on Hundred Days challenges on EzineArticles also has its own hashtag, which is #HAHD.
If you're arranging some special conference or a new trending topic, you can encourage your readers to tweet using your special hash tag.
President Obama has done that, and even though the presidential campaign is long over, he still uses Twitter, and people who tweet about the President use the hash tag #obama.
How should you use the #? Most people add the hash tag at the end of their tweets, but you can insert it into your tweets where it feels natural.
Whether in the beginning or in the middle of your tweets.
When should you use the #? You should only use the hash tag when it is relevant to be found using a search for your specific subject.
You shouldn't create hash tags just for the sake of getting one.
People can already find your tweets based on the content you deliver in your tweets.
But a hash tag can unite people in campaigns for conferences or special events.
What can you do with the #? As stated above, it is a good way to sort tweets, and show relevance for others participating in the special event you are hash tagging.
Use it to add community value to your tweets.
Have fun tweeting.
