    Main Standards

    • The FLSA establishes standards for national minimum wages, overtime pay, record-keeping and child labor in the American workplace.

    Coverage

    • FLSA's standards apply to employees engaged in interstate commerce or in the production of goods for commerce, including being employed by a company that carries out such activities.

    Exemption

    • However, there are workers can claim exemption from minimum wage standards and/or overtime pay requirements. Examples of exempt workers are those who work in educational institutions, foreign ships and fishing operations, small farms and in households for babysitting purposes.

    Regulation

    • The FLSA is administered by the Wage and Hour Division (WHD) of the United States Department of Labor. The WHD is responsible for enforcing the country's labor laws.
