Purchase a saltwater chlorination system and review manufacturer instructions for installation.

Install the system according to manufacturer instructions. You may need to lower the water level in the spa to ensure a dry wall location for initial application. This is where the intake cell will be mounted. Other systems may involve cells that float directly in the water. In any case, you should mount the cell as instructed in the product directions. The cell will absorb salt (sodium chloride) from the water and convert it into chlorine.

Test current salt levels in your pool with test strips from a pool store. Chlorinated hot tubs will have some salt in them already. It is important to maintain the correct salinity levels to avoid discomfort and ensure disinfection.

Add enough salt to obtain 4,000 parts per million (ppm).This amounts to about 50 pounds of salt per 2,000 gallons of water in pools without existing chlorine. Anywhere between 2,500 and 4,000 ppm is a safe amount. You can obtain large bags of salt from pool supply stores.

Turn on the saltwater chlorination system once all the salt has dissolved in the hot tub.

Run your hot tub pump to encourage movement through the cell.

Test occasionally and maintain a salt level of 4,000 ppm based on your results. Salt can be lost from rainwater overflow, splashing and filter backwashing. Evaporation and the addition of fresh water can also reduce salt levels.
