The Number One Way To Save Money On Your Car Insurance

27
The number one technique that I have used in the past 15 years to lower my insurance bill regularly is to shop around. This is one of the easiest, yet most overlooked ways to save money on your car insurance.

Back in my days of speeding tickets, when I was young, single and drove a 1969 Mach 1 Mustang, I paid something like $300 per month for my car insurance. Getting married helped a bunch with my insurance rates. Taking the brick off my foot helped even more, but price shopping has been the best thing of all!

When my wife and I were expecting our first child, I was going to college full time and trying to make ends meet on part time work. We spent quite a few evenings squabbling over our budget trying to figure out where we could trim a few bucks.

I don’t recall who came up with the idea, but one of us suggested that we should call another insurance company and see if we could find a better price. Amazingly, the first company we called quoted us something like $30 less per month than the company we were with!

Intrigued, we made a few more calls, and ended up with a monthly savings of over sixty dollars… that’s over $720 per year! Not bad for barely an hours worth of phone calls, is it?

Since then, we have made it our custom to call around about once a year, and almost every time, we have been able to lower our premium, sometimes by just a little, sometimes by a significant amount. I believe we currently enjoy close to the lowest premiums possible.

As a car salesman, I was shocked at how many people were paying crazy amounts for car insurance. Why would I even care what they pay, you might ask? I’ll tell you… as a salesman, I was often trying to find a way to free up an extra $20, $50, $200 in someone’s budget so they would agree to purchase a car from me.

One of my favorite things was to ask them how much they pay for insurance, and how long they have been with the same insurer. My first suggestion would be that they call a couple of lower cost, quality insurance companies, such as GEICO or USAA to see if they would qualify for a lower rate.

A large number of my customers ended up buying the car they wanted because of this suggestion. Most had never even thought of calling around for a better price, they just kept the same company there parents used, or whatever they had opened up to in the phone book years ago.

Many times, people were able to save more than the amount they needed to free up in their budget for the new car. My customers loved this, and I really enjoyed seeing them save money [http://howtosellyourcar.net], even if the sale didn’t go through. I had a new friend at the very least!

I suggest that at least once a year (twice is better), and whenever you have a significant change in your circumstances, like your last speeding ticket finally drops off of your record… call 3-5 insurance companies and get an updated quote.

Hopefully, you will be pleased with how often you can lower your insurance bill because of the competitiveness of the auto insurance industry.
