Alternatives for Health Insurance in Arizona

23
    • If you don't qualify for health insurance in Arizona, you have a few alternatives. Some of these are government plans that provide medical care and are funded by Medicaid. Health insurance is indemnity insurance because it attempts to "make you whole." In other words, it aims to restore you to the health condition you were in before making the claim. Managed care plans are technically not insurance, but they do rely on insurance and if you don't qualify for insurance, you won't qualify for a managed care solution--like an HMO plan--either.

    Self-Funded

    • Use personal savings for medical expenses. This approach requires that you build up a savings specifically for medical purposes. You won't be able to use an actual health savings plan (which is a tax-free savings account) unless you have a high-deductible health insurance plan to go with it, but personal savings can still be used to pay for doctor's visits. This method is expensive and requires that you pay yourself an amount of money equal to or greater than what you would have had to pay for premiums on a health insurance policy. Additionally, you would need to pay premiums based on a zero-deductible plan because the deductible and the "insurance" amount are both coming from your savings account.

    Discount Program

    • Discount health care programs in Arizona allow you to obtain discounts on health care services. These discount program companies are licensed to do business in the state and are "guaranteed" because no insurance is involved. You are essentially joining a preferred provider organization, a network of doctors, that has agreed to discount its services in exchange for a low monthly fee. Even though the services are discounted, they are not insured, so you will be required to pay for any costs incurred out of pocket.

    Concierge Medicine

    • Concierge medicine is available in Arizona. Concierge medicine consists of doctors who may or may not accept insurance, but who offer services in exchange for a retainer. This is also known as "retainer-based medicine". Concierge doctors may also offer some discounted or free services as well as house calls. Fees may be lower with a concierge doctor than with a traditional doctor because a health insurance company isn't involved. Less staff is needed to maintain and process insurance paperwork, which means fewer regulatory hurdles and employees are needed.

    Well Woman HealthCheck Program

    • Women over age 40 may qualify for the Well Woman HealthCheck Program in Arizona. This program offers free breast exams and Pap smears. If you are diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer, you will receive free treatment for your condition through Medicaid. To qualify, you must call the Well Woman HealthCheck Program.

    KidsCare

    • KidsCare provides health care coverage to low-income children up to age 19 in Arizona. To qualify, family income must be between 101 and 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Income at or below 100 percent of the federal poverty level qualifies you for free coverage. Income between 101 and 200 percent qualifies you for coverage with discounted premiums. Covered services are generally all-inclusive and range from prescription drug coverage to mental health coverage. These services are paid through Medicaid, so you'll need to qualify by contacting the KidsCare program.
