What Can I Feed a Parakeet?
- Be sure to incorporate a healthy mix of vegetables into your parakeet's diet. Parakeets can eat a wide array of vegetables, including beets, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, beans and romaine lettuce. Additionally, incorporate squash, sweet potatoes, turnips and zucchini. They should be chopped up and added to the bird's food dish.
- Whole grains and cereals are part of the parakeet;s diet. Whole grains were most common when they lived in the wild. Seed options include amaranth, couscous, flax, whole wheat and whole rices. They also enjoy other grains and legumes, which include almonds, beans, lentils, peas, tofu, alfalfa beans, lentils and sunflower seeds. However, do not feed your parakeet lima beans or navy bean sprouts. They are toxic to parakeets.
- Fruits work well in a parakeet's diet. No matter what fruits you choose, they must be finely chopped. Parakeets enjoy eating apples and pears. They can also enjoy grapes, mangoes, melons, oranges, pears, plums, strawberries and watermelon, among other options. Dab the fruits with paper towels to remove excess juice.
- Parakeets enjoy flowers as well. Flowers provide crucial vitamins and minerals for healthy birds. Stick to the following list of flowers, however, as other flowers could be toxic to parakeets. According to The Parakeet Cage, you should stick to the following flowers: chamomille, chives, dandelion, day lilies, eucalyptus, fruit tree blossoms, herb blossoms, hibiscus, honeysuckle, impatiens, lilacs, nasturiums, pansies, passion flower (Passiflora), roses, sunflowers, tulips and violets.
