How to Respool a Baitcaster Reel

    • 1). Select a good monofilament fishing line. A good 14-pound test line is strong enough for most fishing situations. If you intend to go deep-sea fishing, select a stronger line.

    • 2). Remove the plastic protection covering your fishing line reel. Soak the reel and its line in a bowl of warm water for an hour. Soaking the line relaxes the line's curl, helping to prevent the line from tangling when using your baitcaster reel.

    • 3). Allow the line to dry for at least 30 minutes. Poke a pencil through the center of the reel. Then if you're outside, drive the pencil into the ground at an angle. If you have a workshop, secure the end of the pencil with a vise. Angle the pencil so the reel won't fall off. This allows the reel to spin freely as you take fishing line from it.

    • 4). Feed the end of the fishing line from the reel through the bottom guide eye on the fishing rod. The guide eyes are placed along the length of the rod. The fishing line will be fed through these eyes once you're finished respooling your baitcaster reel.

    • 5). Take the end of the line and push it between the reel guides on the reel. Wrap the line once around the reel. Tie the line with a secure knot. Cut off any excess line from the knot with diagonal cutters.

    • 6). Turn the baitcaster reel's handle to wind fishing line around it. Continue turning the handle until the reel is full of line. Then cut the line, leaving enough to feed through the guide eyes on the rod.

    • 7). Push the end of the fishing line along the length of the rod, through the guide eyes, and tie on the lure you want to go fishing with. You're now set to go fishing with your baitcaster reel.
