Catapres (Clonidine) decreases heart rate and relaxing the blood vessels so that the blood can flow easily. It decreases the levels of certain chemicals found in the patients blood causing the arteries to widen and enabling normal heart beat. The effect is lowered blood pressure. FDA approves the medicine for high blood pressure treatment.

Side Effects of Catapres (Clonidine)
Several side effects of are observed due to the intake of Catapres (Clonidine) some of these are to be reported immediately to the doctor. The side effects such as having difficulty in breathing, sore throat, swelling of face, tongue or lips, decreased rate of heart beat, abnormal change in blood pressure, headache, dizziness, fainting, redness of face, neck and chest.  If any of these side effects are observed it is advised to consult your doctor before continuing the medication.

Some other side effects that are observed with intake of Catapres are nausea, vomiting and constipation. Some patients may experience tiredness or fatigue. Dry mouth, Headache and dizziness can also be experienced while under medication but these are not quite serious side effects. Catapres may interact with some of the other drugs you might be taking; it also reacts with alcohol so drinking alcohol should be avoided while taking the drug during your treatment with Catapres. It has not been established if Catapres (Clonidine) has any adverse effects on pregnant women or fetus. It is advised not to intake this medicine during the third trimester of pregnancy. Breast-feeding mothers should nurse the infants with breast milk only after consulting with their physician.
