  According to the Greece Tourist Organization, sightseeing in the ancient country can be simultaneously educational, recreational and leisurely, as Greece has many open-air museums and archaeological sites suitable for tourists. When visiting the southeastern European nation, there are many centuries-old historical monuments that are popular points of interest with tourists.
  
  

The Acropolis of Athens

• According to the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Acropolis is the "greatest and finest" monument in Athens, Greece. Constructed in the 5th century B.C., the Acropolis served as the setting for ancient festivals, religious ceremonies and critical moments in the city's history. In 1975, a joint committee was formed to preserve and restore the Acropolis on a large scale. Under the guidance of the Service of Restoration of the Monuments of the Acropolis and the First Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, the Acropolis underwent a restoration lasting through 2007.
  
  

Monument of Lysicrates

• The Monument of Lysicrates was constructed in 334 B.C. as a dedication to the Dionysos series of plays. The monument is one of several that previously lined the Street of Tripods, or present-day Tripodon Street in the Athenian neighborhood of Plaka. The monument is 9 feet tall and more than 21 feet in diameter. In 1669, French Capuchin monks worked to preserve the monument from deterioration by bringing it into their monastery.
  
  

Monasteries of Meteora

• Located in Thessaly, Meteora is home to several ancient Greek Orthodox monasteries nestled in the cliffs. According to Sacred Destinations, Byzantine hermits inhabited the peaks in the 11th century and the monasteries were built between the 14th and 15th centuries. By 1500, there were 24 monasteries at Meteora. As of September 2010, the six remaining monasteries of Meteora include the Agios Stefanos, Varlaam, Agios Nikolaos Anapafsas, Roussanou, Great Meteoron and Agia Triada.
  
  

White Tower

• The White Tower is in Thessaloniki, Greece, and dates back to the 15th century. The tower was originally used as a defense structure and later as a residence for prison guards. Today the White Tower houses a museum featuring ancient artifacts like mosaic fragments, coins, sculptures, pottery, glass shards and more. According to Thessaloniki's tourism website, the White Tower stands on the ground where a Byzantine tower stood. The Byzantine tower connected an eastern fortification wall with a sea wall, which was demolished in 1866.
