Exchange-Students Information
- Many exchange programs, like Rotary and American Field Service, are always looking for host families. After a background check and interview are performed, host families can select which teenager they choose to bring into their home for months or even a year. AFS.org explains that though the job is unpaid, host parents leave an indelible impression on exchange students as they mentor them through their experience with a new language and culture.
- Students as young as 15 can go abroad for the summer, semester or year. Others choose to wait until college. Though programs cost thousands of dollars to attend, many offer scholarships. The student can choose the country of study, but not the parents or city.
- Host families should encourage students to attend all programs and school functions. Otherwise, the teen can become introverted and homesick. Homesickness and consequent moodiness usually occur after three months in the country.
- Students can email, phone and write home, though contact should be limited to once or twice a month.
- Though families and students are encouraged to read about the foreign country, they should have few expectations about the mannerisms and personality of their specific family or exchange student.
