23
    • 1). Go scouting in the evening. You can wear camouflage if you like, it may help. The more wooded the area, the more likely there will be a turkey in it. Find the turkey’s roost. Turkeys nest in trees or what is called a roost. Sometimes you may see them in the trees. They will also scratch up leaves and leave droppings.

    • 2). Set the trap away from roost but where the turkeys are feeding through. Place a barrel feeder in an area best suited to build an enclosure. Set the timer on the feeder to disperse Indian corn at various times throughout the day. Monitor the turkeys with a game camera. Follow their feeding patterns for the next couple of days.

    • 3). Feed the turkeys in. They typically eat two times a day, mid morning and mid afternoon. Notice the turkeys will have a pattern that they will follow. When they begin to be on schedule, place a portable blind near the feeding area. Monitor them again with the game camera. Ensure they have enough food. Do not go near them. Let them get used to the new object.

    • 4). Build the trap. When the turkeys are away from the feeding area, you need to begin building the trap. Have everything ready because you may have only a couple of hours. With the help of some nearby trees and a few metal posts, build an enclosure with the large poultry fencing. Hold it all together with utility wire. The turkeys will not be able to see the fencing. Leave the feeding area open about five feet wide. Early the next morning, place the corn on the outside leading in.

    • 5). Catch a turkey. Everyone helping must sit quietly behind the blind until the turkey is in the right place to capture. One person will have to stand guard at the opening after the fact to keep the turkey from escaping. If you do not catch a wild turkey within a week, you need to evaluate your technique and move to another area.
