- Properly sealed and maintained granite counters are virtually scratch, stain, heat and chip resistant.

- Installing granite counters in your home will add a minimum of 10% to the resale value.
- Granite is not excessively porous, making it resistant to chemicals and acids.

- Expense. The cost for granite is higher than other materials, due mostly to the labor associated with its removal, the work involved in cutting it and the necessary for installation.
- Granite does not have a uniform pattern or color, and will also contain natural cracks or pits.
- If you use it as a cutting board, it will dull your knives.
- They will need to be installed by a professional, and should not be undertaken as a DIY project.
- Sealant will need to be applied at least once a year to offset stains and fading.
- No matter how good of an installer you hire, there will be seams visible.
When you're ready to select a company to do the job, here are a few tips to remember:
- If one company has rates that are much lower than others, beware. A great price will not equate to great quality. And there are times a company might give you a low quote, but later tack on extra expenses not originally accounted for.
- If you begin looking during a busy time frame, know that the best companies can be backed up with work. Should this happen, don't just hire the first company to have an opening. Instead ask why they have an opening when others have a waiting list.
- When getting referrals, try to get more than one from the fabricator you're looking at. Instead of asking for a customer list from the company, which will only result in you getting the names of happy customers, ask others about who they got their granite counters from and what the experience was like.
