Gun Prices Rising
With threats of stricter gun laws, guns and ammunition have been flying off shelves. Crowds have been swarming stores, and waiting in long lines at gun shows, hoping to buy weapons rumored to be banned. Because of this high demand the cost of firearms has skyrocketed.
Not only are guns and ammunition scarce for hunters and target shooters, but policemen as well. Police officers across the country are having a hard time getting a hold of new weapons and ammunition. They are told they will have to wait months for their orders to be fulfilled. This pushes back may of their training programs.
Along with everyone else, law enforcement is forced to pay the higher prices for these items. This means their budget is tighter, and they have to cut back on programs and services.
One type of weapon President Obama proposed to ban in January is assault weapons. This type of gun was used in the Aurora, Colorado movie-theater shooting, and the Newtown, Connecticut shooting this past year.
In 2004 there was actually an assault weapon ban, but the ban was up in 2004. There was a debate as to whether or not this ban had any effect. According to the Huffington Post, Iowa Senator Charles Grassley said, "The 1994 assault weapon ban did not stop Columbine. The Justice Department found the ban to be ineffective.
The Huffington Post argued against that statement saying that a study conducted for the Justice Department never came to a conclusion on whether the assault weapon ban was successful or not.
These guns have been around for over 100 years. They are popular amongst hunters and target shooters. People are scared of the unknown, and for that reason these weapons are selling out across the country and many online stores. Customers are claiming the prices have doubled, and some even claim they tripled.
The Bushmaster AR 15 is the main type of gun users are after. It was the same gun used by Adam Lanza in the Newtown, Conneticuit shooting. Because of his use people fear it will be the first to go.
