How to Prune a Salix Caprea Pendula
- 1). Prune back dead, damaged branches and those that cross and interfere with other branches as well as any branches coming from the main stem. Do this in the winter, as Jackson’s Nurseries Online recommends. The stems from the main trunk, they explain, are from the willow’s rootstock and are not the weeping variety.
- 2). Cut back the head of the plant hard every 4 to 5 years. This will encourage more catkins to form and rejuvenate new growth.
- 3). Remove 1/3 of new growth in the summer. This will encourage new side shoots to form.
