Illegal Gas Can Laws in California and Beyond

24
I just have to get this off my chest before my head explodes. You know, kind of like some of those California green gas cans pop their tops when they get warm. Or so I've heard.

As most of you from California (should) know, there are restrictions on the types of gas containers that can be used and sold. It hasn't been much of an issue if you're using one of the unapproved containers, you just had a hard time buying them.

I've heard that lately law enforcement in places like the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area (ISDRA) and Ocotillo Wells State Offroad Area are starting to ticket people for having these white/clear racing type cans.

I've asked the BLM if there is more enforcement on the issue with "illegal gas cans" but haven't heard back yet. I'm sure there's a good reason, like they don't want the thousands of people out there on any given weekend mistakenly pouring gas on their Cheerios because they didn't realize it was gas in that white, 5 gallon container sitting in the back of a trailer.

Word is the government decided to legislate gas cans because they evaporate 2 pints of gasoline every 2 years or 20 years or some crazy amount. That's a lot of gas. Of course, it's nothing compared to the quart of gasoline that seems to get spilled every time I try to fill up the John Deere using those terribly designed California green cans. Just sayin'.

One has to wonder, though... they're trying to get millions of these unsafe, leaky gas cans out of our garages and trailers in the name of the environment and put them where?

Into landfills? And replace them with NEW cans that spill way more gasoline than they prevent from evaporating?
