Watch Ronny Rios Vs Andrew Cancio Live Stream
ordan Shimmell and Damon McCreary, both residents of the Great Lakes state, will tangle on the undercard of the nationally televised Ronny Rios vs Andrew Cancio fight at Chicago's UIC Pavilion Monday night. Undefeated Shimmell (13-0, 11 KOs) is a former national amateur standout who has made rapid strides since entering the pro ranks in June of 2012.
Currently ranked second in the US at cruiserweight, 25 year old Shimmell ventures into the heavyweight class against 40 year old McCreary. McCreary once a good super middle/lightheavy lost some key years due to legal troubles. Since returning to the ring his weight has ballooned up to the 250+ range so he will clearly have a distinct weight advantage. Detroit's McCreary's lone loss (15-1, 11 KOs) came against Deontay Wilder. Shimmell hails from the Grand Rapids area and would seem to be the solid favorite here although McCreary's punching power could make it interesting for however long the fight goes.
8CN's Chris Thurman spoke with the undefeated NABF featherweight titleholder Ronny Rios about his upcoming title fight on April 14. Rios will be defending his title against Andrew Cancio in a 10-round junior lightweight bout at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois.
Rios, 24, is fighting out of Santa Ana, California, and boasts a perfect record of 22-0 with 10 KOs. Rios defeated Rico Ramos in January of last year to capture the then vacant NABF featherweight title, and has had two fights since. He scored a TKO in the 6th round of a scheduled 10-round match against Leonilo Miranda and a unanimous decision victory over Jose Angel Beranza, both fights in California.
Cancio, also out of California, currently holds a record of 15-2-2 with 11 coming by way of knockout. Regarding the upcoming title fight, Rios said: "I'm well prepared and ready to get in the ring." Rios said his training and preparation for Cancio has included "a little more strength and conditioning, and a little more sparring than usual."
In the evening's main event, exciting southern California natives Ronny Rios (22-0, 10 KOs) of Santa Ana faces Andrew "Chango" Cancio (15-2-2, 11 KOs) of Blythe in a 10-round junior lightweight bout. In the co-main, speedy southpaw Julian Ramirez (10-0, 6 KOs) of East Los Angeles faces rugged veteran Carlos Rodriguez (22-13-3, 10 KOs) of Los Mochis, Sinaloa in an eight-round featherweight showdown.
The fighters are very well matched. When asked who his toughest opponents have been so far, Rios named Guadalupe De Leon, who he fought in May 2010, and Roger Gonzalez, who he faced in September 2011. Both fights went the distance and resulted in a unanimous decision victory for Rios. In September 2012 Cancio also faced Roger Gonzalez, against whom he has suffered his only defeat in the last six years, or eight fights. Cancio vs. Gonzalez resulted in a very close majority decision victory for Gonzalez.
Ronny Rios vs. Andrew Cancio, a 10-round junior lightweight bout is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and 8 Count Productions and is sponsored by Corona and O'Reilly Auto Parts. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. CT and the FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes broadcast airs live at 9:00 p.m. ET/8:00 p.m. CT/6:00 p.m. PT.
