The Use of Rocks in Your Garden
- If you have a large boulder in your garden and you don't know what to do with it, instead of struggling to remove it, turn it into a focal piece. Plant flowers around the boulder or encircle it with multicolored pebbles. A boulder can even serve as a highlight of your garden at night -- a spotlight positioned on it will cast a warm glow and create an interesting shadow.
- In climates where it is difficult to maintain grass or areas where it is difficult to grow plants -- such as in the desert or under trees -- consider planning a rock garden. Choose a variety of different sized and colored pebbles to create an eye-catching display. Amidst the rock garden, add plants that will grow with minimal water or sun, such as succulents or ornamental grasses.
- Rocks are useful as boarders in a garden. Stack small- and medium-sized rocks along the perimeter of your garden to create a protective barrier that will prevent lawn mowers, weed whackers and even some common garden pests, like slugs, from disturbing your garden. In addition to serving as a protective barrier, rock boarders also give a traditional cottage look to a garden.
- Use rocks as stepping stones in your garden. Arrange a series of flat rocks along the ground and press them into the ground so that they are flush and deter falls. Create a meandering path that gives your garden a sense of romance and whimsy -- allowing visitors to stroll through and enjoy the sights and scents of your landscape.
