How to Replace the Cover on a Cedar Chest
- 1). Unscrew the lid you are replacing from any hinges it may be attached to. Use the pry bar to get any remaining pieces of the lid off of the chest. You should have an open box.
- 2). Place the piece of 3-inch-wide cedar board on top of the box against one edge. This is the support for the back of the lid. Make sure this is square with the box sides and screw it place.
- 3). Place the 2-inch square pieces of wood on one side of the larger piece of cedar. These pieces should be offset 1 inch from the sides and vertically centered. Once you have these pieces in place, screw them into place
- 4). Attach the hinges to the support beam that has been attached to the chest with screws. One hinge should be centered on the chest and the other two should be offset from the sides of the chest by 1 to 2 inches.
- 5). Screw the larger piece of cedar to the hinges with wood screws.
- 6). Place one side of the support hinge on one side in the interior of the box. Attach it with wood screws. Attach the other side of the support hinge to one of the pieces of the square wood on the lid.
