Treating Recurrent Bacterial Vaginosis - The Problem With Antibiotics

18
Bacterial vaginosis is a very common condition.
You will probably be aware of a pungent fishy smelling vaginal discharge and you may have itching, burning or irritation around the sensitive vaginal tissues.
Many women find that they have several outbreaks and treating recurrent bacterial vaginosis proves difficult.
Caused by a bacterial overgrowth, the exact reasons why a woman gets BV are not fully known.
However, it is caused by an imbalance of the naturally occurring bacteria within the vagina and this could occur for many reasons, including smoking, drinking alcohol, a poor diet, a change of sexual partner, overwashing, using perfumed soaps and even douching.
However, bacterial vaginosis is not a sexually transmitted disease and women who are not sexually active can also be affected.
The most common way of treating recurrent bacterial vaginosis which a doctor might prescribe are antibiotics.
These could be in the form of creams, lotions or tablets.
There is a huge incidence of recurrent outbreaks of bacterial vaginosis in women who use antibiotics with over half having a further outbreak within months of the treatment ending.
The irony is that if a woman revisits her doctor with this further outbreak, research shows that she is likely to be prescribed the exact same treatment and the cycle begins again.
A further problem with antibiotics is that they themselves can cause unpleasant symptoms such as stomach upsets, nausea and yeast infections, the reason being that antibiotics are unable to distinguish between harmful and protective bacteria and as a result, all bacteria is eliminated.
The fact that there is such a large incidence of recurrences indicates that conventional treatment does not work and there is one glaring reason for this.
Conventional treatment simply deals with the symptoms and not the root cause, and this is the real key to treating recurrent bacterial vaginosis.
This means that a close examination of your lifestyle is called for and you should take steps to eliminate all the potential root causes which may apply to you.
You will find many of the potential causes earlier in this article.
