    Installation

    • 1). Measure the rough opening where door will go. Order the desired door, following manufacturer's recommended dimensional allowances. Typically, this is 1 inch to 2 inches around the unit. When the door arrives, open and remove packaging.

    • 2). Verify the rough opening is 1/2 inch wider than pre-hung unit width and height. Door trim should cover the space between the rough opening and frame. Verify the threshold is level, that the hinge side of the rough opening is plumb, and that the door head is square to the hinge side of the rough opening. Adjust as needed.

    • 3). Center the door in the rough opening. Place the top edge away from the frame and the sill on the floor. Lift the door up until it is flush with the wall plane.

    • 4). Tack 8d finishing nail into the hinge side of the door frame. Nail the frame into the wall studs, through shims, about 6 inches from the top corner. Tack another nail into the frame about 6 inches from the bottom and a third, in the center of the hinge side of the frame.

    • 5). Shim and repeat on the lock side of the frame, nailing through the jamb and shim, 6 inches from the top corner, 6 inches from the bottom and in the middle. Insert shims between the frame and the rough opening at regular intervals around the unit.

    • 6). Nail the header through the shims using 16d finishing nails with heads exposed for easy removal if necessary. Verify that the space between the door and the frame is uniform all around. Adjust it by removing the nails at the top or bottom and by tapping the frame until the space is continuously uniform. Add shims and re-nail as needed.

    • 7). Countersink nails to secure the door assembly in place when the frame is square. Attach additional trim if applicable.

    • 8). Check the door for proper operation. Paint or stain as needed and according to the manufacturer's finishing directions.
