The only way to understand the amount of metal turmoil that your dog suffers when they are infected with mange is by focusing on a similar skin condition in human, commonly called scabies.
Basically this condition is caused by microscopic mites that burrow beneath the dog's skin and they always cause irritation when they move beneath the skin.
The female mites are the culprits that cause the itchiness since they are known to lay eggs in the tunnels that they make beneath the skin.
It is important to note that once a dog is infected with Sarcoptes scabei they may take about three to four weeks for the real signs to appear and the itchiness to begin.
Unlike other contagious diseases of dogs sarcoptic mange usually remains sub-clinical, which means that no visible signs are seen until the mites have undergone a full life cycle.
This is why this skin condition wrecks havoc in a breeding kennel if the owner is not keen to notice early signs of infection.
Indeed sarcoptic mange is every pet owner night mare since it causes a sever allergic condition in the dog that is fatal and may be very difficult to diagnose.
If the dog is treatment for allergy the condition recurs and in this case sarcoptic mange should be suspected and more clinicians are keen to take skin scrapings for a diagnostic test.
