According to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASAALH), Black History Month began in 1915 in Chicago. Carter G. Woodson, founder of ASAALH, initiated Black History Week, which became widely accepted as Black History Month in 1976. Black History is Month is celebrated is celebrated each February and recognized worldwide in schools, churches and community organizations. Activities help to commemorate the month and to increase knowledge about the history and contributions of African-Americans. - Invite friends for a quiz night or host the quiz at a church or community center. Create the quiz game using index cards. Write questions on one side of the cards and answers on the other side. Develop a point system so that players earn points for correct answers and lose points for incorrect answers. Decide between individual players and teams. Remember to have reference materials on hand to decide disputed answers.
- Work with family members to create a family tree using free genealogy sites and materials. Combine your family tree with a timeline of black history. Ask family members to meet throughout the month to collaborate and share information. Design and create a document that presents the information. Have a final meeting to view the completed family tree and distribute copies to family members.
- Create your own local black history by researching nearby places of historical interest. Plan a day trip for a small or large group and arrange transportation. Create a tour brochure that provides information about each site. Contact sites scheduled on the tour and ask about reservations or fees. Tour sites may include black history museums, plantations and any site that is relevant to people or events in black history.
- Make a black history month itinerary of local events and activities. Check newspapers, community organizations, book stores, libraries, and colleges and universities. Add to your itinerary the events that you plan to attend. Develop a diverse list of events that includes art, literature, history, interactive activities and performances.
- Plan a film festival by selecting movies or documentaries about events in black history and scheduling a showing each weekend during the month. Hold the showings at home and invite friends. Prepare meals that are relevant to the night's movie and leave time for guests to discuss the movie and share ideas and reactions about the historical subject.
