"The Vegas Strip" by Edgar F Coudal
From the Artist: The three main things to get across about Las Vegas are the heat, the money, and the women. All three were in mind as I tried to populate this semi-abstract street scene with a crowd of amorphous faceless figures dominated by dollar signs and building-high women, all using a warm-dominant color scheme.
From the Painting Guide: As usual, I looked at the photo before reading your statement about the painting and must confess I was surprised to discover it's Vegas.
It felt Moroccan to me, the combination of saturated colors and long-leafed vegetation, the sense of intense sunshine. Looking again, I think it's because there are not any cars packed onto a road so it doesn't really feel urban to me despite the multi-storey buildings in the background.
It's always a risk when putting symbolism into a painting that a viewer won't "get it", but my not doing so doesn't ultimately matter. It doesn't change the lovely sense of warmth the colors convey. Nor the strong composition which pulls the eye from the edges into the small figures in the center.
