How to Grow a Nice Head of Cabbage
- 1). Prepare a site in rich soil that receives full sunlight in cool regions. In warmer regions cabbage grows nicely in light midday shade.
- 2). Plant cabbage seeds indoors four to six weeks before last frost in flats. When the plants have a few leaves, transplant from the flat to a pot. Next transplant young plants in early summer into your garden. Space cabbage plants 18 inches apart.
- 3). Apply a balanced fertilizer when you transplant and when the cabbage heads are half formed. Cabbage are heavy feeders and need lots of nutrients.
- 4). Apply a 4- to 6-inch layer of mulch for stress-free cabbage. Mulch reduces weeds as well as helps soil temperature and moisture fluctuations.
- 5). Water heavy from planting tender cabbage plant in the garden to the head formation of the cabbage, then water moderately to keep the heads from splitting.
- 6). Twist the plants to break the stem when harvesting heads. Plunge the blade of a spade into the soil on one side of the plant, then pull spade up, to uproot the entire cabbage.
