Iron Man 2: More Than Just Crazy Explosions

11
Action films have been around since the dawn of the first motion pictures. Over the years, the continuous formula was as follows: blow some things up, put the characters in near-death scenarios, and don't forget the classic damsel in distress for our hero to rescue at the end. Pretty generic right? Recently, however, film companies have been breaking down the walls, allowing for more creativity in this exciting, yet somehow predictable genre. This is perfectly exemplified in one of Marvel's latest and greatest: Iron Man 2.

The sequel to the box office blockbuster, Iron Man, this movie once again returns with the international flavor, although this time in Russia and Monaco instead of Afghanistan. Set six months after the first movie, Iron Man has now successfully privatized world peace. Even then, billionaire playboy Tony Stark is struggling with problems: he doesn't have the drive or capacity to remain as CEO of Stark Productions, his blood is increasingly poisoned from the palladium in the arc reactor that was supposed to be keeping him alive, and new enemies are popping up all over the place.

One interesting element that is unique to the Iron Man movies is the political aspect of them. While the first movie specifically dealt with the morality of the United States' war in Afghanistan, Iron Man 2 focuses more on the congressional side. Tony Stark is required to attend a congressional hearing, where the committee members demand that he turns over the Iron Man suit for national security purposes, but he defiantly tells him that he and the suit are one and there is no current risk to national security in the status quo, if anything, he is preserving peace.

With politics aside, new foes, both in business (the quirky Justin Hammer, a jealous competitor whose weapons company is years behind Stark Productions, technologically speaking) and in the superhero arena (the vengeful Russian physicist, Ivan Vanko) arise. When those two enemies join forces, things are only bound to get worse. Undoubtedly, Tony Stark is in for quite a ride, but at least he still has his best pal Rhodey around for the most part.

Another feature that used to be rare in action films but is now a common sight: the strong, kick-butt female character. Natalie Rushman, from the get-go, is that woman, and the audience continues to marvel at her ninja-like abilities for the rest of the film. She is a sharp contrast to the amicable, emotional, Pepper Pots, who is also back again in the sequel as Tony's right-hand woman.

Of course, there are still plenty of explosions and gunfire and things getting blown up; just what anyone would expect of a comic book hero movie. But it's the intriguing combination of superhero action, politics, business competition, romance, family pasts, and even science, that make this movie stand out from the rest.
