Five common reasons people get divorced

8
Although figures released at the start of 2010 revealed that the divorce rate in England and Wales had fallen to its lowest point in almost 30 years, it remains a situation that many couples will face. Between 2007 and 2008, more than 136,000 divorces were granted in the UK.

But why do these relationships fail? Here are five common reasons, in no particular order, for why so many marriages end in divorce:

1. Infidelity - while some couples work through infidelity, many people find it impossible to trust the cheating spouse again. Equally, repeated cheating is also a common cause of divorce, as partners reach their breaking point.

2. Physical abuse - many abused partners, particularly women, find it difficult to leave their partner - often through fear - the good news is that some do escape their untenable situation.

3. Sexual problems - incompatibility in the bedroom is another cause, often when the couple doesn't talk about the situation. Sexual dysfunction, insecurity and a lack of understanding are thought to be the main problems.

4. High expectations - relationships are tough and when deciding to get married, it is often because you have assessed their potential as a wife or husband. Unfortunately, reality is never like the movies, and not everyone can live up to such high expectations. Married people who continually fall short of their spouse's expectations can also become frustrated.

5. Financial difficulties - Unfortunately, no matter how much we like to think that money doesn't matter, it does. Most fights in relationships occur over financial issues, such as spending too much or mounting bills. If the difficulties aren't sorted soon enough, a relationship might struggle to last the course.

If you think these problems sound familiar, the important thing is to communicate with your spouse and tackle the issues together. However, if you're in the unfortunate situation of knowing the marriage is coming to an end, then it's vital that you get the right support, both from a legal point of view and our families.

For legal advice, you'll need to find a reputable family solicitor or divorce solicitor with plenty of experience.
