The trucking business is a worldwide industry which is essential for the movement of goods and services and therefore vital to the economies of all countries in the world.
It is wise to get experience of working for a carrier as a trucker and if you are lucky enough to work for Swift Trucking then you are going to get your eyes opened on what the trucking business is about.
The first thing to be decided is what you are going to call yourself.
The title "Swift Trucking" has already been taken, but it gives you an idea on how to set your thinking.
The name should be catchy and easy to remember.
The key here is to spend as much time as you need.
When the right name pops into your mind you will know that it is for you.
The second thing to be decided is what sort of goods you want to carry.
You may already know this because of your existing trucking business experience.
Will it be tanker haulage for liquid materials, perishable goods such as fruit and veg which made also require a refrigerated container.
Again be sure that this is the type of merchandise that you are happy working with.
The third thing to get is your federal authority to operate.
Without this you are going nowhere in terms of starting trucking business.
The fourth thing is to get all necessary insurances and bonding.
It is only at this point that you can apply for you authority and license to transport goods.
The fifth thing you need to do is your BOC-3 filing.
This can be done online and provides a list of all companies in every state who can help you if you have a problem on the road.
The sixth thing is that your truck and trailer will need a license for every state that you will be operating in.
The seventh thing is to get your IFTA License which makes provision for the payment of fuel tax in each state you visit.
The eighth thing you will need to pay the Federal Heavy Highway Use Tax which is the federal government's way of getting payment for use of the federal highways.
The ninth thing you need is Single State Registration applied by that state's Department of Transport (DOT).
You will need to do this in every state you plan to work in.
The tenth thing you need to check out is Individual State Permits.
New York, Oregon and Kentucky are states that require Individual State Permits in addition to those noted above.
