How to Stay Safe Around Train Tracks

10
    • 1). Always obey the flashing lights and lowered crossing gates. Don't try to pull around the gates, thinking you have time to get by. A train moves faster than it appears. Keep in mind it may take a train up to a mile to stop after the brakes are applied. If the conductor does spot a car or person on the tracks, he may not be able to stop in time.

    • 2). Teach children they should not play on train tracks or walk along them. Trains are sometimes quiet and a young person may not hear or see the train especially at night. Be aware in most states it is illegal to walk on the train tracks because of the potential dangers.

    • 3). Pay attention if you are waiting for a passenger train at the platform. Watch as the train approaches. Stay away from the platform edge. Allow passengers to get off the train before you try to board.

    • 4). Walk when crossing a train track. Running across the track can result in a fall on the track. Keep in mind many train tracks may have designated crossing points for pedestrians. If you do have to cross a railroad track, always cross at the designated crossing points.
