Driving

• 1). Purchase extras of everything your dog needs. Items, such as food and medicine, are not things that you don't want to risk running out of on your road trip. Get a pet crate that will fit in your car and a canine first-aid kit, in case of injury.
  
  
• 2). Prepare your dog for spending time in a dog crate. Spend a few weeks before your trip to allow the dog to become accustomed to the environment. Put things in the crate, such as a favorite toy or water bowl, that will remind the dog of home.
  
  
• 3). Plan to stop every few hours for potty breaks and to allow you and your dog to stretch your legs.
  
  
• 4). Drive with your windows down or run the air conditioning to keep the car well ventilated and cooled.
  
  

Flying

• 1). Make an appointment with the veterinarian to get your dog a full checkup. Most airlines require dogs to receive a clean bill of health before boarding the plane.
  
  
• 2). Decide whether you want the dog to ride in the cabin or in the cargo hold. Only smaller dogs are permitted to fly in the cabin, and they must fit in a carrier that slides underneath your seat. Fees for animals vary, depending on airline and where they will ride. Contact your airline to find out specific rules and restrictions for cabin and cargo hold pet transportation.
  
  
• 3). Book a direct flight, if possible, to minimize the length of time your spends on a plane. The Florida Keys offer airports in Marathon and Key West.
  
  
• 4). Arrive at the airport for your departure a few hours early. Have your dog in its crate and ready to go when you check in to expedite your boarding process.
