Nutrition Diet for Cirrhosis
- Put Down that Shaker
Salt encourages fluid-retention in your body, which can make the swelling in your legs and abdomen worse. When eating out or selecting ready-made foods, look for those that are marked "low-sodium." In your own cooking, season with herbs and spices rather than salt. - A Rainbow of Nutrients
Since cirrhosis can cause malnutrition, you should eat a plant-based diet for maximum benefits. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, organic if you can afford it. You will also need to get protein, and you can find this in legumes, beans, as well lean animal sources that are free of hormones and were raised free-range and grass-fed. Avoid fatty foods, raw seafood and heavily processed foods. - No Alcohol
It doesn't matter whether excessive alcohol was or was not the cause of your cirrhosis. Alcohol will cause more liver damage, so you should abstain at all costs. When out with friends, sip on seltzer or sparkling water. If it's too tempting, then do other things with your friends that don't revolve around drinking.
