How to Purchase House Windows

Choose the window's frame material. Wood is traditional and attractive but subject to rot and decay. Metal is less attractive than wood but more durable. Vinyl windows are resistant to decay and corrosion but slightly less durable than metal or wood. Metal window frames generally cost less than wood and vinyl frames. - 2

Choose the functional characteristics of the window. A window that does not open is called a picture window. Windows with two panes that slide up and down are called double-hung windows. Windows with panes that slide side to side are called gliders, and hinged windows that open outward or inward are called casement or awning windows. - 3). Choose the type of glass, keeping in mind that this feature determines R-value. Consider the location of the window. South-facing glass receives more sun during winter and less sun during summer; south-facing windows are desirable. East-, west- and north-facing windows receive direct sunlight during most seasons of the year; windows facing these directions require additional R-value. The term "dual-paned" refers to extra glass, and "low-e" refers to a window coated with a reflective film. Many windows also feature a layer of insulating gas such as argon. Remember, each feature adds to the overall cost of the window unit.
- 1). Visit local home improvement warehouses for the most competitive prices. "Big box" stores duke it out over the prices of common items such as windows. Get quotes from competing stores, and ask salespeople if they can beat a competitor's price.
- 2). Visit specialty millwork shops such as lumberyards to find specialty items and personalized service. Lumberyards and millwork shops often have access to different manufacturers than "big box" stores have. Small manufacturers produce high-quality windows and build windows to special specifications, including unusual sizes and shapes.
- 3). Consider salvaged windows. Several establishments sell salvaged windows, including architectural salvage yards and charitable organizations such as Habitat for Humanity. Salvaged windows range in price according to their rarity; while you can find gently used, contemporary windows for a steal, hand-crafted, antique windows might run into the hundreds of dollars.
