Blue Fishing on the New Jersey Shore

    About the Bluefish

    • Bluefish, named for their silvery-blue color, are members of the Pomatomidae family, similar to jacks and Pompano. They can grow up to 4 feet and weigh up to 15 lbs. Known to be aggressive and voracious feeders, they are sometimes referred to as marine piranha. They travel in large schools and will feed on almost anything that catches their eye. They've even been known to bite humans who unwittingly swim into a feeding frenzy.

    When the Fish are Running

    • Bluefish are one of the most common fish found in waters around the world. But from May to December, they are most commonly found in the Atlantic waters between Maine and North Carolina. Because bluefish aren't picky eaters, if smaller fish are running, the blues will follow. Look for schools of menhaden and silversides, which are a favorite snack of bluefish.

    How to Catch Them

    • When bluefish are abundant they aren't too difficult to catch but their feisty nature makes them difficult to keep. Try surf fishing or trolling with various lures. If you are fishing from a boat, attract them by chumming the waters, using a mixture of chopped fish and blood. Be careful not to overfeed them or they won't take the bait. Remember to use a wire leader. Bluefish have sharp teeth.

    Blues Rules

    • Bluefish are not endangered. In fact, they are fairly abundant during the warm summer months off the coast of New Jersey. However, that doesn't mean the supply is unlimited. The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife restricts recreational fishermen to 15 bluefish per trip. However, they can be any size. You can fish for blues in any season but you still need a proper fishing license.

    How to Eat Them

    • Bluefish are commonly found on the menu but some diners complain it tastes too fishy. This taste can be reduced by cleaning and chilling the fish soon after catching. The meat is darker, almost meaty and can be an oily, acquired taste for some. This oily texture makes it ideal for grilling. However, if you still want to cut the fishy taste, marinate the cleaned fish in citrus juice or vinegar. Many fans say smoked bluefish is a delicacy.
