Make £Millions£ with Direct Mail....REALLY?

We've all seen the adverts and webpages from people claiming to have made $Millions using a "system" that they are now prepared to offer the public. Do they work?

Well, before you decide whether they work or not, let's just go over the basics of most of these systems (they will include these basic steps, but may have other subtle changes).

A basic Direct Mail system will comprise of the following steps;

1. Identifying a Niche Market (or perhaps a market with enough room to sustain many businesses)

2. Identify a Product that meets the needs and demands of the niche market

3. Compose a Sales Letter that describes the benefits of the product to the market

4. Purchase a List containing contact details (names and addresses) of people looking for the type of product you have identified

5. Send the Sales Letter to the List

6. If the Sales Letter is any good and the List is a quality List, hopefully a number of Orders will arrive.

7. Fulfill Orders.

So, it's pretty basic really, but what you'll notice now is that most of the people selling products this way are actually selling the System itself. So, they are making money from selling a System that shows you how to make money.

Does this sales technique still work for actual (non money making) products? In my experience, no, not really. The problem being that you are reliant on two key things. Firstly your ability to write a Sales letter good enough to convince your prospective customers that your product is worthy of their investment and secondly, the List you have actually contains contact details of people that have been accurately assessed as being interested in your particular types of products.

These two issues are only the start, because your main problem is convincing someone to read your Sales Letter. In these days of instant access and evaluation, it is easy for someone to access the Internet to get a list of alternative products, do a price comparison and then decide whether they really want the product. It's not all about price, but that does play a major part.

So, are there any other draw backs. Well, you may need to "test" your Sales Letter a few times before your convinced you have got the best Sales Letter for the job. Each test will no doubt require a sample of a 1,000 customers from your List. This soon adds up!!

I'm sure there are some success stories out there, but it would be nice for the people selling these systems to provide some indication regarding the last time the system was used to sell a real product and not another money making system.
