Bulk Mailing Instructions
- 1). Fill out a request for a permit at any post office that will enable you to send Standard Class mail at any time during the next twelve months. It simply requires the name of your company and its address, and the number and type of mailings you expect to mail during the year. As of March of 2011, the permit costs $185. The price is scheduled to increase to $190 on April 17, 2011.
- 2). The United States Postal Service (USPS) requires that you pay for your Standard Class mail in advance, so it will establish an account for you into which you will make a deposit for each mailing. The initial permit charge of $185 will count as your first deposit.
- 3). Bring a Price Qualification Report and a Postage Statement to the post office along with your mail. You can get both of these forms from the official USPS website (usps.com). The Price Qualification Report may not be mandatory but it will help the postal inspector while he reviews the mailing specifications. The Postage Statement is required. It provides information such as your name, the number of mailings, and an estimate as to how much it will cost.
- 4). Follow other USPS guidelines to save more money per piece. For instance, if you have at least 150 pieces going to the same zip code and you have added a bar code that contains all nine numbers of the extended zip code, you will save over two cents per piece.
- 5). Take advantage of the course given by the USPS about the nuances of preparing Standard Class mail. Courses are usually given weekly and are offered at your community's main post office. They are about an hour long and well worth the time. Call them to reserve a space.
