You are getting ready to build your first chicken coop so you need to make sure you consider a few things before beginning and that would include starting with the right set of plans and an idea of what you want.
Naturally the layout inside of the coop is important as you need to ensure enough space for their perches and nesting.
A good rule of thumb for the perches is to have them approximately 2 inches thick and about 10 inches from the ground and about 10 to 12 inches between each perch to give each hen enough room.
Nesting boxes are also important as they provide a convenient place for the chickens to lay their eggs and by providing this you will be ensured of clean eggs uncontaminated by the chicken droppings.
The nesting boxes need to be about a foot tall, a foot wide and a foot deep each as this size will hold about 3 to 4 chickens.
Fill them with shredded paper or straw and make sure that you have easy access to the eggs inside the nesting boxes.
You may also want to consider building the floor of the coop at a very slight angle so that it will help provide drainage for easier cleaning.
It is important that you provide fencing around the coop and bury the wire mesh deeply into the ground to make it more difficult for animals to dig underneath it.
Some type of a net over the entire area will help keep other airborne predators from getting to your chickens.
Providing all of this will give your hens a safe place to live and breed providing you with good fresh eggs for your personal or business purposes.
