5 Quick And Easy Cichlid Care Guidelines

31
The chichlid family (cichlidae) has roughly 2,000 species and continues to grow as more species are discovered often.
Cichlids come from Africa, America and Asia means that your cichlid care will vary depending on what part of the world your cichlid originates from.
Once you know the origin of your cichlids, basic maintenance is all that's required.
Here is a quick and basic cichlid care checklist to follow: 1.
Aquarium safety
needs to be top priority! Your tank will need to be placed on a sturdy "tip proof" stand out of direct sunlight.
I highly recommend a "cabinet style" base stand as not only are they sturdy but they also provide space below to store your supplies.
Metal based stands tend to be flimsy with little storage space and their welds have been known to break sending the tank crashing to the floor.
Always remember an aquarium filled with water is very heavy and good support is a must! 2.
pH levels:
Depending where your cichlid is indigenous to will depend on what pH levels your water will need to be.
Some cichlids prefer water that is more acidic where as others prefer a more alkaline based water.
Either way, with a pH testing kit, you'll be able to test the water like a pro.
Most pet stores carry these kits.
3.
Cichlids are very temperature specific
and need their aquarium water at 78-82f (depending on origin).
Avoid heat lamps as that will only heat the top water.
Water heaters are needed to keep a consistent temperature throughout the tank.
Once again, most pet stores carry water heaters and will be happy to show you how to properly use it.
4.
Good filtration
is absolutely necessary as keeps the water clean and free of harmful toxins.
I don't recommend a "floor" filter as some cichlids are diggers.
I do recommend a "sponge" filter as they (with little maintenance) tend to last years and keep your aquarium water clean.
If chemicals are used, make sure to place your cichlids in another tank to avoid chemical poisoning which can kill your "little balls of aggression".
5.
Food:
As mentioned before, your cichlids origin will depend on what it eats.
Foods consumed range from fresh, dry and frozen.
Algae is another source of food for your cichlids that relatively easy to grow inside the aquarium.
Watching your cichlids diet is important as some foods can cause bloating which unfortunately can be deadly.
Once you learn a few simple "how-to's", then taking care of your cichlids will be a breeze! Cichlid keeping is more than just a hobby; it's a responsibility that can and does bring joy to the entire family! Happy cichliding! Tim
