Building a Chicken Coop - The Importance of Ventilation

47
Picture yourself on a hot day.
The temperature keeps on rising and you keep getting hotter.
The air around you gets stuffier by the minute and you feel yourself suffocating.
Now most people would just turn on a fan or the air conditioning.
But what if you couldn't do that? You would be in unbearable heat and not have the ability to do anything about it.
You would be flat out miserable.
Well, this is the way chickens feel when they are put in a coop without proper ventilation.
So, when you are building a chicken coop you want to include a ventilation system that will keep your chickens cool, healthy, and happy.
The importance of ventilation is a very over looked factor when building a chicken coop.
But because chickens are living breathing animals they too can over heat or be exposed to toxic ammonia gases made from their own waste.
So for these reasons good ventilation should be considered when you're putting your hutch together.
Many people don't take into consideration how much moisture chickens can generate, and that's a problem too with lack of ventilation.
In a moist heat environment, mites and lice thrive and those two parasites are a big enemy of your healthy chickens.
Make sure when you pick your design and plans you keep ventilation as part of your priorities.
Good ventilation also helps keep your hen house materials from getting mold, mildew or unwanted spores that can grow from a poorly ventilated hutch.
Especially in the straw or hay bedding you're going to use as a nesting surface for the chickens to lay their eggs.
Position your doors or windows towards a known breezy direction if possible to get the best ventilation.
This is a natural ventilation system that you chickens will love.
Remember, the more natural your habitat the better it will be for your chickens.
I know what when you are building a chicken coop, the number of steps and materials you have to keep in order can be overwhelming; every step is important.
The importance of a well ventilated hutch can't be over stated for the health and well being of your chickens.
