Tylan Powder

• Tylan soluble powder is a commonly used antibiotic. It is usually the first attempt to clear up tear stains when they are mild. The soluble powder can be given orally or dissolved in water and helps fight infections that cause tear-staining. The powder is not used to treat much in dogs, so most breeds do not have immunity to the powder. This makes it an extremely effective treatment.
  
  

Delta AlbaPlex

• Delta AlbaPlex is also a common antibiotic. It is used to clear up bacterial infections but also contains low levels of steroids that can reduce inflammation in the tear ducts, another common cause for excessive tearing that leads to tear-staining. The antibiotic is given orally once a day and usually clears up tear-staining within a week. The treatment can also help clear mildly blocked tear ducts, but completely blocked ducts must be irrigated by a vet for tear-staining to be permanently cured.
  
  

Metronidazole

• Metronidazole is an anti-diarrhea medication given to all types of dogs. The dose depends on the breed and size of the dog in question, but it is commonly prescribed for yeast-based infections that result in gastrointestinal problems. The medication can reduce tear stains caused by red yeast (the most common cause of tear-staining). The antibiotic is given for a couple of weeks and can clear up tear-staining issues. A vet will likely want to determine if the tear-staining is yeast-based before giving the medication.
