How to Get Distance With a Baitcaster Reel
- 1). Tie a Palomar knot to connect to the line a lure that is compact and weights at least 3/8 oz. Position yourself so you cast with the wind.
- 2). Find the circular knob on the opposite side of the reel from the handle. Some reels have a dial instead of a knob. Turn the dial or knob counterclockwise as far as possible.
- 3). Push the baitcaster's thumb bar down with your thumb. Immediately place your thumb on the reel's spool to prevent it from spinning.
- 4). Hold the reel where it connects to the rod with one hand. Grab the butt of the rod with your other hand. Bring the rod and reel over your shoulder, continuing until it is at a 45-degree angle with your back. Then move the rod and reel forward in a casting motion.
- 5). Snap your wrist forward and remove your thumb from the spool once the rod and reel travel past your casting shoulder. Hold your thumb just above the spool.
- 6). Push down on the spool lightly just before the lure hits the water. As soon as it hits, press down firmly with your thumb to stop the spool from spinning.
