Definition:
A physician who treats illness or injury by opening the body to perform therapy or repairs. In the past, a surgeon was a physician who used a scalpel to open the body to perform treatment. Today, surgeons may use minimally invasive techniques that do not open the body, or minimally invasive techniques where only the instruments are inserted into the body.
