    Burgundy, France

    • According to the Wine Geeks website, the limestone basin upon which the region of Burgundy sits in France makes it among the finest in the world for growing wine grapes. The limestone clay soil is heavy in nutrient content derived from still decaying million-year -old shellfish fossils. So potent is the soil quality in Burgundy that it was long thought that exceptional Pinot Noir could be grown in no other region in the world.

    Rutherford, Napa Valley

    • The Rutherford region of the Napa Valley is known for producing Cabernet Sauvignon that is the among the finest in the world. The area benefits from the joining of three alluvial fans that join soil types of limestone and sandstone together with nutrient rich mineral deposits along with a Mediterranean style climate ideal for grape growing. A signature of the region's wine is known as "Rutherford dust," a spice note that is only found in Cabernet wines produced from grapes grown in that portion of the Napa Valley.

    Tuscany, Italy

    • Volcanic soil, limestone clay and sandstone are just some of the soil types that compromise the wine regions in Tuscany. This soil variety gives the region its wine growing strength, enabling it to support a wide range of grape varietals. The Wine Geeks website states that certain parts of Tuscany also benefit from higher growing altitudes which provide for different levels of sunlight, temperature and oxygen which grapes like the Vernaccia prefer.

    Bordeaux, France

    • The nutrient-rich gravel soil that dominates the Bordeaux region of France provides ideal growing conditions for wine grapes. Warm summers coupled with just the right amount of sunshine allow quality grapes to be grown in all styles--white, red and sweet. Bordeaux is the only place in the world that is famous for such growing conditions, according to Wine Geeks.
