How do I Increase a Modem's Connection Speed?
- The speed capabilities of the modem are settings that cannot be accessed locally, but are set by a remote computer. The settings within the computer, namely within the computer registry, can be altered to reflect peak connection speeds needed.
- Registry areas of interest are the MTU, or Maximum Transmission Unit; MSS, or Maximum Segment Size and RWIN, or TCP Receive Window. Setting these values high in the registry allows larger data packet sizes to be sent and received, and allows for transmission of more packets at a time before the required acknowledgment.
- Before changing any information in the computer's registry, be sure to save all values on an external storage device, such as a CD, as a backup.
