Training a Puppy for Newbies

32
Training a puppy is both an easy and a hard undertaking; this is because they literally have no training.
The puppy you inherit or purchase will basically be a blank slate, it has no learned behaviours and is basically waiting to be trained.
This means that you can train the dog to display exactly the behaviour you desire.
However getting this end result requires far more training than when training a dog who has already been trained.
A dog that has already been trained will know how the owner trains them.
Therefore when being trained something new, or having their current training reinforced they will be more receptive.
However a puppy does not know what training is, and so needs to be taught the process as well as the content of the training.
The main areas that one will start with when training a puppy are toilet training and going to bed.
These are the main two training activities that one needs to teach a puppy so that it can live within a home environment.
It can be a really long process with some puppies in training them to go to the toilet in the garden.
However perseverance and positive/negative reinforcement of behaviour is necessary to see results.
It can also be hard to get a puppy to sleep in a dog bed, they are not used to this environment and so getting them to sleep in a room by their selves can be hard.
However giving in and letting the puppy sleep with you just sends out the wrong training signals for a young age.
Your puppy will have toiletry accidents when this happens you should show your disapproval immediately.
It will be no good going after him 10 minutes later as he will have no idea what you are talking about.
Your puppy doesn't have accidents to wind you up; in fact as they get older they have one thing in mind and that is to try and make you as the owner happy.
As an owner, its your responsibility to train your dog to behave the way you want him to.
He'll be more than happy to oblige, if you just teach him right.
Training a puppy successfully will result in one having a well-behaved and obedient pet.
They will still be happy, bouncy and mischievous because that is the nature of dogs, but they will know how to behave in the home.
