Vehicle Tracker Laws in Texas
- Texas penal code Section 16.06 states that it is against the law for you to knowingly place a vehicle tracking device on a vehicle owned or leased by someone else. The code goes on to state that this offense is a Class A misdemeanor.
- If you commit a Class A misdemeanor in Texas, you can be put in jail for up to one year or ordered to pay a fine of up to $4,000, or both.
- Texas penal code Section 16.06 goes on to state that if it can be proven that you were helping a law enforcement officer with an investigation, this constitutes an affirmative defense. Law enforcement officers are exempt from this law as it specifically allows them to use vehicle tracking devices in the investigation of crime.
