How to Get a Lymphedema Compression Machine for Home Use

15
    • 1). ~ Get a prescription for a home compression machine ~

Ask the oncologist, surgeon, radiologist or other specialist who diagnosed the lymphedema to write you a prescription for a home compression device for lymphedema. You will need to have had physical therapy (manual lymph drainage or medical message) before submitting a claim for home compression devices.

    • 2). ~ Research online the manufacturers of lymphedema compression machines ~

Take your time and read about all the available machines and the garments that come with them, which actually deliver the compression. Understand how the machines work, how long one therapy session is, what the warranty period and replacement cost is, etc.

Read reviews of the products you are most interested in. Are there endorsements by respected medical associations? How long has this company been in the business? Does the product and process make sense to you?

    • 3). ~ Get a demonstration of how the equipment feels and works before committing to it~

Have a sales rep come to your home and demo the equipment you would be buying. You have to see the set-up requirements, understand the process for fitting and wearing the garment(s) and using the device. You want to hear and feel the machine and garment while it is in use. The rep may take measurements to determine garment size, should you order a device.

    • 4). ~ Have the supplier determine coverage by your health insurance plan ~

My sales rep got an approval and the co-pay amount from my insurance company within days of my home demo and in advance of my committing to the equipment.

    • 5). ~ Receive the machine and take advantage of training on how to properly set up or fit the garment and use the machine ~

I watched the DVD provided by the manufacturer and read the user's manual before the trainer arrived. She helped me fit the garments (3 pieces connected by tubing to a controller machine), get in the proper position, and run through a session (68 minutes).
